Newsmakers from Saturday’s action:

Kevin Maitan, ss, Braves. The No. 1 international prospect a year ago, Maitan blasted his first pro homer Saturday as Rookie-level Danville fell 9-8 to Johnson City (Cardinals). Maitan, 17, had three hits and is hitting .311/.344/.410 in 15 games in the GCL and Danville. Maitan has explosive tools, with plus raw power being the main draw.

Luiz Gohara, lhp, Braves. The Braves’ Midseason Top 10 hits the web Monday and expect Maitan and Gohara to figure prominently in it. Gohara on Saturday whiffed a career-high 11 in six scoreless innings as Double-A Mississippi beat Biloxi (Brewers) 8-0. Gohara threw 72 strikes of 98 pitches and allowed just five hits and no walks. Even as loaded as the Braves arm in terms of prospect arms, Gohara has the best pure stuff in the system, with a fastball that can reach upper 90s.

J.P. Crawford, ss, Phillies. On Friday, Kyle Glaser wrote about Crawford’s turnaround and that continued Saturday. Crawford was 4-for-4 in Triple-A Lehigh Valley’s 9-1 win over Durham (Rays). In the past 30 games, Crawford is hitting .302/.386/.586 with six homers and 19 RBIs.
