RE: My Rolling Pickups Thread : Lightning and Johnstown Hockey Heavy

    Thanks fellas!

No cards to add with this update, but I do have a sweet piece - Saturday night's Coach Jason Spence bobblehead that they gave out to the first 1,500 fans in attendance. Spence was a long time player with our ECHL team and was a big fan favorite. He reached as high as the AHL level during his playing career.

I figured I may as well post last year's bobblehead, too, though I know some of you saw it before. He's a familiar name if you know football - Jack Ham. He's a minority owner of our team.

Thanks. I lucked out and ran into an old friend at the game and he gave it to me afterwards.

I'm very thankful I didn't have to beat up any old ladies as we had discussed on facebook .

Small update today - 8 more cards in the Tomahawks team set, given out in exchange for canned goods for a charity food drive. They're a little larger than a standard card.

This makes 16 cards total on the season. There's still a few more guys without cards for one reason or another, so I hope they have one more weekend giveaway to finish the roster.

RE: My Rolling Pickups Thread : Lightning and Johnstown Hockey

I finally grabbed some vintage cards of guys from the Johnstown Jets of the 1970s. Eddie Johnston might be more well known to some of you as the Pittsburgh Penguins coach turned general manager, but he was also a solid goalie, helping the Bruins win two Cups. Gilles Villemure is a Vezina Trophy winner, and seems to be a old time fan favorite of Rangers fans.

There was a flood in 1977 that took the city from a thriving steel mill town and sent it into a downward spiral that it never really recovered from. Along with lives, the economy, and parts of the city itself, the flood managed to wipe out the Johnstown Jets by destroying the arena's ice equipment.

A year later, a new team was formed - the Johnstown Red Wings, affiliates of the Adirondack (and thus Detroit) Red Wings. The team bridged the gap between the Jets and Chiefs as it only lasted two seasons. Their general manager was hockey hall of famer Ted Lindsay.

Moving on, I picked up these two for my Chiefs collection. Chris Mueller is likely the last Chiefs alumnus to make it to the NHL since the team moved in 2010. I don't see any of the other alumni still playing in the ECHL or AHL getting called up.

And the oddball of the day is this Roli for my Lightning collection.

Thanks for looking, and letting me share a little bit of our hockey heritage with you!

Thanks Andy. That Gilles has one of the best vintage designs in all of sports cards.

I picked up a 1993-94 team set. Though it was a pretty ho-hum release containing no future NHL players, it's a set I had as a kid (lord knows what happened to it), and I'm happy to have picked it up.

The highlights are ECHL Hall of Famer (and current Anaheim Ducks assistant coach) Bob Woods and Eddie Johnstone (a former NHL player).
